Why did shalamar split up
I remember when I had no responsibilities whatsoever. I was all over the world. It was an amazing time. The group broke up in London. I kicked around L. After that, I got the offer to join Shalamar. Howard Hewett: Shalamar was an amazing time, man.
I got the offer to join Shalamar on a Friday. I was sitting in the office of this guy, Jeffery Bowen, who used to be a producer for Motown. I was doing a project with him for a couple of months. It was a project they were doing on Freddy Hazel who used to play guitar for Parliament-Funkadelic. He was doing a solo album and Jeffery was producing it.
The money started getting funny. They were in the middle of a promotional tour and apparently the guy that sang that song, Gerald Brown, split.
The manager was in New York at the time in the Motown building. Jeffery and I were at the Motown building in New York as well. We were on the 15th floor and Solar, the record company, was on the 9th floor. Howard Hewett: That was the very end of when that happened. I left Shalamar in Howard Hewett: Not really.
We had so much success and we were so young. At that time I was Jeffery was a year older and Jody was about three years younger.
We were kids. We never had that. I never understood it. Babyface and L. But Jody was against the reunion album because she was still pissed at me. I asked Benny Medina, who at the time was with Face, what is the deal with Jody?
He told me she was upset about an argument we got into before we broke up. She says we were yelling and screaming at each other and she says I told her she would never be shit without Shalamar. I remember that argument. She was calling me names and I was calling her names. I could have said that. Today I am still close to Jeffery and to this day I still consider Jody like a sister.
She may not feel like that, but I do. During a conversation one recent afternoon in a West Hollywood restaurant, Watley, 28, was enthusiastic--but it was hard to tell, because of her dry, deadpan voice. Vocally, Watley is no Anita Baker. An average singer armed with the right material and producers can make a top-notch dance album. I just wanted to work with him.
The request, accompanied by nervous laughter, was dead serious. Though she exited Shalamar in after eight years with the group, people are still curious about the details. Howard Hewett, the Shalamar leader who reportedly kicked Watley and Jeffrey Daniel out of the group, has told his side. Hewett, by the way, has since left the group for a solo career. Shalamar, with a new lineup, is still on Solar Records.
According to her version, that old standby, musical differences, is largely to blame. We always had the same producer, the same stable of writers. Man, the first time I saw her in black lycra pants and boots Howard is truly a talented man. Jody left to go solo before howard. Rumor has it that he told her that she wouldn't make it and she's been pissed ever since that's why there's been no reunion even though Jeffery is very willing as well.
But ya'll trippin' to diss Howard as if he has NO talent. To be honest, Shalamar needed them both. If howard left first, it wouldn't have been the same either. Also Jeffery wasn't "Kicked out".
I"m thinking he was a cocky ass bastard and that's why Jody and Jeffery left to go solo. Howard does gospel now. Rhondab said: ya'll are all smokin' some serious crack Jeffery is it his name? Used to beat the fuck out of Stephanie Mills. Howie had the voice and the looks that lead the band to its greatest successes. He also had a few other He is a great vocalist and has turned his life over to God.
Thankfully, he changed his life around and is now an all-around nice guy. He is seriously underrated as a performer.
