Lockie retreats to his room for several days after embarrassing himself with Vicki. Meanwhile, a TV commercial is being filmed in Vicki's backyard. When Lockie and Egg discover that the nearby river is contaminated, they seek John East's help in getting it cleaned up.

Phillip makes sure the whole town is in attendance when Lockie kisses Dot for the first time, but things may not turn out as planned. Dot invites Lockie to go surfing, which distracts him from his responsibilities, including his promise to Egg to help at a river conservation event. Lockie has trouble breaking up with Dot, Mum develops a weird attitude toward TV and Lockie and Egg's mission to save the river hits the skids. Lockie starts to fall in love with Vicki again and joins a surf group to get his mind off her.

But will his enthusiasm last when Boof joins, too? Lockie gets back together with Vicki, but doesn't like being in the spotlight as a popular kid, especially the part about the "Ladder of Love.

Lockie's dancing needs some help, but his newfound popularity has gone to his head and his brother Phillip is reluctant to help out. When Vicki invites him to go water skiing, Lockie tells her he's a wiz at it, when in fact he's never even tried it. A misunderstanding with Vicki pits Lockie against an old man in a fight to the finish. Meanwhile, a sculptor invites Mum to pose nude. It's not bad enough that Vicki and Phillip share a birthday; now, Lockie has nearly ruined Vicki's party by showing up wearing the wrong outfit.

Lockie is torn between friendship with Egg and his feelings for Vicki on a weekend at John East's "Find Yourself" camp. Everyone in the family deals with Mum's illness in their own way, but Lockie's decision to handle it like a mature adult can only last so long.

With their mother still in the hospital, Lockie and Phillip enter a fishing contest to cheer themselves up, but things quickly go wrong. When word gets out that Mum's in the hospital, all of Angelus turns out to take care of the Leonards, with a lot more help than they actually need. Nan and Pop only make things worse when they try to help out in Mum's absence.
