To check whether I can logon to client1 when the primary dc is down, I shutdown server1. Then i tried to logon to client1.
I got an error "Windows cannot connect to the domain, either because the domain controller is down or So I thought the additional DC was not working. Then I started the server1. But now even when server1 dc is running, I am not able to logon to the domain1.
I can only logon to client1 by selecting the local machine. Will Authentication Services failover to another domain controller when the one it is talking to goes offline? If no new DC can be found, QAS goes into "disconnected mode", where it will try every 30 seconds to find an available DC to communicate with. In environments with long latencies, you may want to increase the default timeout.
However, when modifying this value, careful attention should be made with respect to other timeout settings. For example, a mscldap-timeout that equals vascache-ipc-timeout could affect the ability of vasd to resolve objects within the IPC timeout period. Once a VAS client determines that it cannot reach a specific domain controller it is marked as unreachable for a period of time. During this period you are guaranteed not to attempt to connect to the unreachable domain controller.
